What is a rhinologist?
Rhinology is a subspecialty within otolaryngology, focused on the treatment of the nose and the paranasal sinuses. Rhinologist require an additional year of fellowship after completing residency training. The training equips rhinologists with expertise in the anatomy and physiology of the nose, and familiarity with advanced medical treatment options and surgical techniques. During residency at Duke University Medical Center, Dr. Choi completed over 750 sinus surgeries with additional 300 surgeries completed during fellowship.
Patients are often referred to Dr. Choi after failing prior attempts at managing their sinus symptoms through medications and surgeries, or when complications occur from prior surgery. Additionally, those with advanced rhinologic concerns are frequently seen by Dr. Choi, including those with recurrent nasal polyps, cerebrospinal fluid leaks, sinus tumors (benign and malignant), excessive tearing and complicated chronic sinusitis. He works with neurosurgery colleagues in a collaborative fashion for surgery on skull base tumors.
