Malignant Tumors
Cancerous tumors of the head and neck account for approximately 4% of all cancers in the U.S. and can start in the sinonasal cavity, the oral cavity, the pharynx, larynx, lips, and rarely, in the salivary glands. Men and individuals over the age of 50 are more likely to develop malignant tumors of the head and neck.
Symptoms
Symptoms of head and neck cancer may include:
White or red patch(es) in the oral cavity
Unusual bleeding in the mouth
Dysphagia
Difficulty hearing
Persistent nasal congestion
Frequent headaches
Pain in teeth
Swelling and/or numbness in the neck
Causes
While the direct origins of cancers are poorly understood, certain factors are known to contribute to an increased risk of developing head and neck cancers, including:
Alcohol consumption
Tobacco use
Human Papillomavirus (HPV)
Ultraviolet light exposure
Epstein-Barr virus exposure
Radiation exposure

Options
Treatment of head and neck cancers will depend on the size, location, stage of cancer, and the patient's overall health. Treatment options can include surgery, radiation therapy, chemotherapy, immunotherapy, or a combination thereof.
