Thyroid & Parathyroid Disease

The thyroid gland is located in the front portion of our neck and play a crucial role in hormonal regulation. Thyroid problems are significantly more common in women than in men, and may include:

  • Thyroid goiter (enlargement)

  • Hyperthyroidism (overactivity)

  • Hypothyroidism (underactivity)

  • Thyroid nodules

  • Thyroid cancer

The parathyroid glands are located just behind the thyroid gland, and closely regulate our blood calcium levels. Parathyroid disorders may include:

  • Hyperparathyroidism (overactivity)

  • Hypoparathyroidism (underactivity)

  • Parathyroid tumors

Symptoms

Symptoms of hyperthyroidism may include:

  • Weight loss

  • Increased sensitivity to heat

  • Irritability

  • Weakness

  • Sleep difficulty

Symptoms of hypothyroidism may include:

  • Fatigue

  • Constipation

  • Weakness

  • Memory or concentration problems

Causes

Causes for thyroid and/or parathyroid disorders are numerous. Primary hypothyroidism/hyperthyroidism are caused by a disruption to the thyroid gland itself, whereas secondary hypothyroidism/hyperthyroidism is caused by a failure of the pituitary gland. Moreover, primary hypoparathyroidism/hyperparathyroidism are caused by a disruption to the parathyroid gland itself, whereas secondary hypoparathyroidism/hyperparathyroidism are caused by another condition that affects levels of blood calcium.
