H&N Skin Cancers
Skin cancers fall into three main categories: Melanoma, squamous cell cancer, basal cell cancer.
Symptoms
Skin cancers may have the appearance of a wart, crusty spot, ulcer, mole or sore. The growth may or may not bleed and/or be painful.
Causes
While the direct origins of cancers are poorly understood, certain factors are known to contribute to an increased risk of developing skin cancers, including:
UV exposure (sun or tanning beds)
Immunosuppressive medications
Radiation exposure
Treatment
Options
Proper diagnosis should be first confirmed through clinical examination and biopsy. Proper treatment will depend on the stage at which the cancer was caught, but may include a combination of surgery, radiation therapy, and/or chemotherapy.
